[number] Restaurants in [city] Pledge Not to Serve Cruel Veal,
Receive Thanks and Appreciation From Animal Advocates
Farm Sanctuary and compassionate citizens are expressing heartfelt
thanks and appreciation to leading [city] restaurants who have pledged
not to serve veal from calves who are raised in crates and fed a
diet that causes anemia. Among restaurants who have signed the pledge
are [names of restaurants signed].
A group of animal activists participating in Farm Sanctuary's Say
No to Veal campaign approached area restaurants and asked them to
sign the pledge to not sell cruel veal. We felt it was a good
way to bring the veal issue to the local level, said xxx,
a local animal rights advocate. Activists are urging other respected
[city] establishments to join these fine restaurants and to sign
the pledge against serving inhumanely produced white
veal.
To produce white veal, young calves are taken from
their mothers and chained by the neck in small wooden crates just
two feet wide. The calves cannot move, and this prevents their muscles
from developing, so their flesh remains soft. In addition, the calves
are fed an all-liquid diet deficient in iron and fiber. It is designed
to cause anemia and produce the pale-colored flesh sold as white
veal. These practices are so cruel that they have been outlawed
in Europe, but so far, they remain legal in the United States despite
widespread public opposition.
In the absence of appropriate legal protection, it is up to conscientious
consumers and retail establishments to take a stand against cruel
farming practices in the United States. Thankfully, these fine [city]
restaurants are doing just that.
