Local Activists Educate Restaurant-Goers About Veal
Concerned citizens will gather in front of [name of restaurant]
on [date] at [time] to educate the restaurant-goers and pedestrians
about the making of veal. They will distribute educational leaflets
describing inhumane practices used to produce veal.
Veal is one of the cruelest forms of modern agribusiness.
Male calves born to America's dairy cows are considered worthless
and are taken away from their mothers immediately after birth,
said xxx, a local animal rights activist.
To produce veal, newborn calves are taken from their mothers and
chained by the neck in small wooden crates measuring just two feet
wide. The calves will remain in these crates for their entire lives,
unable to walk, stretch their limbs, or even lie down comfortably.
This intense confinement prevents the animals from exercising and
their muscles from developing, which keeps their flesh soft. Besides
enduring restricted movement, veal calves are denied wholesome food.
They are fed an all-liquid milk substitute, which is deficient in
iron and fiber, and designed to produce borderline anemia. It is
this anemic condition that produces the pale-colored flesh sold
as gourmet veal.
Veal production is so cruel that it has been outlawed in Europe
but, sadly, legislation to outlaw veal production has yet to pass
in the U.S. In recent years, American consumers have grown increasingly
concerned about cruel methods used to produce veal, and they are
boycotting this inhumane product. In the U.S., veal consumption
has dropped precipitously from almost three pounds per person per
year in the mid-1970s to less than one pound per person per year
today.
[name of city] citizens asked local restaurants to pledge not to
serve crated, anemic veal. We hoped to get [amount] of restaurants
to sign the pledge in [city]. Many restaurants did choose to not
serve veal, including [names of restaurants signed] and signed our
pledge. [this restaurant] did not. That's why we are here today,
activist xxx told reporters.
The Say No to Veal Campaign is being coordinated by Farm Sanctuary,
a national non-profit organization with shelters for abused farm
animals in New York and California. Farm Sanctuary provides activists
with materials and resources to be able to educate the public about
the plight of animals raised for food in the United States.
